SharpMT - a fantastic tool for users of Movable Type

Whilst trolling round the blogosphere, I’ve lost count of the number of debates surrounding Blog Software and preferred posting tools. I know many people just work straight into the browser, whilst others pre prepare their posts in something akin to notepad, that way avoiding the risk of a browser crash killing all posts.

I have always subscribed to the former school of thought and simply save drafts if my post is getting a little long or if I wish to come back to it later. However I’ve been trying out a piece of software that makes use of the Movable Type RPC called Sharp MT.

Sharp MT allows you to download a list of categories (and even a list of your previous posts!) from your MT blog and lets you work on as many drafts as you wish. These are saved locally until such time as you choose to publish them. All of the usual options are available (body & extended entries, comments open / closed, trackback pings, etc.) and it offers basic formatting tools. In short Sharp MT is MT away from the web.

It gets even better though for those with a Pocket PC as Sharp MT even comes in a PPC version for convenient posting when you’re on the go.

The final thing that clinched it for me is that it offers spell checking and has a plug-in API for continued extension of the programs functionality. Currently there is only one plug-in but if the program is adopted by enough people then we can expect a healthy user support base to begin development of some really cool tools.

So if you use MT and you are after a better solution for creating and saving posts then give Sharp MT serious consideration!

Sharp MT is written in VB.NET and as such requires Windows (sorry Macy folks) and the .NET FrameWork v 1.1
