As BSG returns after its Christmas hiatus (the latest episode aired last night and I haven’t seen it yet) I can settle back into my usual viewing. That said their are a couple of programmes that I’ve discovered lately that have filled the gap. Be aware that neither of these is particularly new:
Heroes is a fantastic offering from NBC that blends the best of Lost, with … well with nothing I’ve ever seen before. Xmen comes close but there’s no lycra here. 12 or more characters, each with a “special” ability, each unaware of each other but destined to meet over the course of the first half of the first season. It’s utterly brilliant and not afraid of a little drama to keep you engaged. A definite must see. Of course it is not available in the UK yet so I would recommend the following. Plus the season has just returned from its seasonal break and will normally be available by Tuesday morning for those of you in the GMT band.
The second gap filler is Firefly, and to class it as such I do it a grave injustice. How did I manage to get this far from its short lived debut and not watch an episode of Joss Whedons’s awesome space western, space opera thingy? I’d seen Serenity a couple of months ago but had little idea that the basis for the movie was so wonderfully written. Dialogue Buffy …. no scratch that, Angel style, kick ass special effects and a cast far more engaging than anything I’ve outside of BSG make for a very special 14 episodes. The only downside? There is little chance of any more.
But in the mean time there will be more BSG (season 4 has been approved and even if they do *cough* kill off one of the leads it will still be brilliant), Ronnie Mars and Heroes … my new favourite show.
And big love goes out to the person who introduced me to it
