I’ve got nothing

// May 31st, 2006 // No Comments » // Personal

worth saying today.

Cheers to all of you who’ve let me know how you did in the Quiz. Looks like I may have stumped some of you with more than just the local knowledge questions.

So in other news today. We got the lawnmower back from the service centre. It managed half the lawn before conking out. A brief inspection showed that there was fuel in the air filter … not good! So it goes back to the service centre on Friday.

Oh and if you haven’t already had a crack at Markiss new comp then give it a spin – it’s a blast!

What? Told you I’d got nothing…

The Quiz – The Answers!

I have a confession to make… I’d accidentally deleted the original answers and had to piece this together from memory – nothing like taking your own quiz to appreciate just how much of a bastard some of the questions are.

Anyhoo the answers are below. By all means sound off in the comments to let me (and the world) know how well you did / didn’t do!

The Quiz!

I said I’d post it and so I shall.

Just a quick note. I really don’t care how well you do. There are no prizes and I’ll be posting the answers in a couple of days. If you want to keep track of how you did then great. Just don’t email me the answers!

That said – enjoy

Technology – making your life easier

We have this thing in Jersey called a Manpower return. All companies need to make this return once a year.

Stupid point the first – my company only employs one person … ME!

Being a technosavvy kinda guy I had asked to complete the return online. I received the email yesterday and was overjoyed to see this excerpt:

You will be sent a secret PASSWORD by POST after the registration period has been closed. This will also be used for future returns

They want me to fill out a form and then they’ll pst me something to allow me to fill out another form. Had I done this by post then they would have sent me the form, I fill it out and send it back. End of story.

Stupid point the second – what is the point of having an online process that relies on the postal system? It’s not like this is internet banking or anything.

The best bit? I log onto the initial form to request a password to access the real form, fill out the fields and click submit … BANG! … 500 server error and not in a nice handled way.

Stupid point the 3rd and 4th – if you’re going to mailshot then make sure you’ve destruction tested the app first! Oh and any web app that doesn’t handle exceptions or errors has no place in the public domain

Finally this morning I logged back into the form to try again only to be met with:

Your company has already been registered to complete the online Manpower Survey.

Stupid point the 5th – if you don’t keep your users appraised of where they stand in the registration procedure they will not trust your application.

Hands up?

Quiz Master, Petanque Captain and not much good at either

What a morning.

So far I’ve done no actual work and have, instead, been trying to finish the organisation of two events happening this evening.

The first is the second petanque game of the summer league (summer – pah … it’s been pissing it down for the past two days). I’ve been temporarily placed in charge of the team for this match and … don’t have a full team. I’ve only got 3 confirmed and have spent most of the morning on the phone listening to people not being in. We’ll just have to wing it and hope that the 4th shows up. If not we’re playing with three – an obvious disadvantage.

The second is the quiz that I’m running at my local tonight. I’ve had the questions and stuff sorted for almost a week but made the mistake of showing them to my dad last night who informed me that it was “too bloody hard”. So in between phone calls I’ve been dumbing down most of the questions to make it easier for, say, 5 year olds.

Frankly I’m evidently not cut out for this organising lark… sod it – I’m going for a cigarette.

Well this site sure is popular

More UAE stuff

Just a quick follow up on yesterday’s post. For those of you not running a Mac you can get Amiga style goodness on your PC using WinUAE a very stable and full featured emulator based on UAE.

Also worth checking out is the ClassicWB series of pre configured hard drive files. You’ll need a full copy of Workbench 3.1 to run it but it provides loads of programs and options for you.
