More bank rantage

// March 30th, 2006 // No Comments » // Personal

Anybody heard the track from William Shatner’s Has Been album? The one with Henry Rollins? Called I can’t get behind that? It’s a general rant about the state of the world today.

Well I’m in the midst of a “Can’t Get Behind That” moment.

Why is it that you pay from something on a debit card and the money is instantly deducted from your account yet an incoming transaction takes up to 5 days to complete?

I CAN’T GET BEHIND THAT KIND OF BLATANT CON ARTISTRY

What? Do the banks of this world think no-one notices that vast sums of money disappear for days on end? Cos here’s the bit that really gets my goat – the money leaves your account instantly

Let’s run some numbers:

  • Take an average company of 50 staff – all paid monthly by BACS
  • Wages run from £20,000 per year to £50,000 per year across the staff
  • You’re looking at an average of £2,900 paid per person per month
  • That’s a total of £145,000 per pay run
  • Nearly one hundred and fifty grand that disappears for 3 days every month
  • That’s a total of 36 days over the course of a year with just shy £1,750,000
  • Now lets take a base rate of 1% interest over the month or so the money isn’t around
  • Do the maths and … what do you know – the banks walk away with a cool £17,400 in lost interest – per year, per company (and that’s before the charges they levy to make the transactions in the first place)

And why oh why do we all sit there and take it? Businesses? Individuals? Why?

A fantastic short animation showing just how twisted one can get if you know your way round photoshop.

Yeah so I know this is nothing of substance but all I have at the moment are pent up angry rants and nobody benefits from them – least of all you.

Four Tet – Time Limited Audio Downloads

// March 30th, 2006 // No Comments » // Personal

Unless you were lucky enough top be in Melbourne towards the beginning of this year there is no way you’ll have been able to see Four Tet play a live set at the Spanish Club…

You weren’t huh? Oh well. It’s a good thing that the official Four Tet site is carrying a selection of downloadable tracks from that session!

Don’t hang around though – they won’t be there for ever!

Novel Intervallic Network Jamming Architecture for Music

// March 28th, 2006 // No Comments » // Personal

Just trips of the tongue doesn’t it?

Basically it’s an online jamming tool (as in music not EM or marmalade) that uses OGG and t’internet to allow completely talentless twots to collaborate on noise creation.

So why not give it a whizz?

As I feared, BSG got the better of me last night … until about 3 in the morning.

So I woke late and now have half a days worth of work to catch up on whilst trying not to watch any more bloody BSG.

I can see my social life taking a serious downturn for the next few weeks…

On the plus side this has prompted me to set up a dinky media station in my room consisting of ye olde stereo with the bass to make your hair fall out , ye little (but fantastic) TV which means I’m all set for Sky other room and possibly some kind of TIVO solution. I’ve been looking forward to building one of these for some time now and this could be the perfect excuse.

It means something

Let’s start again

// March 27th, 2006 // No Comments » // Personal

Another weekend gone.

I suppose the defining moments would be:

  • Robert completely forgetting Mother’s day until the Saturday before and pulling a serious recovery out of the bag on an island where almost nothing is open on Sundays!
  • Some corking food prepared by my dad – lamb curry (interesting as it uses no Coriander!) and Sea Bass with onion jam served on a bed of 4 bean vinagrette
  • My family actually playing a couple of games after dinner rather than falling asleep in front of the TV
  • Cards played in the pub and Lisa totally failing to get the concept of Djinn Rummy

Another week begins.

Wondering how I’m going to make it though this one without forcing myself to watch seasons 1 & 2 of Battlestar Galactica back to back.

Braindrop – Time to exercise your brain

Along the same lines as other infuriatingly simple games, Braindrop is kerplunk for the modern world.

All you have to do is get the golden ball out of the puzzle without dumping any of the silver balls…
