Can I beat my sister to this?

// August 31st, 2005 // No Comments » // Personal

Because I know I type faster but she has a head start on me.

Anyway the conversation this evening spent a little (too much) time on the subject of Fanny Farts and both Lemur and I were convinced that there was a technical term for such a phenomenon (American readers I would remind you that fanny in the uk means something quite different!).

It turns out we were right… and that term is … Queef …

as in I queef you queef …. well actually I don’t but I suppose I could induce one.

Anyway, check out the urbandictionary.com definition of a Queef to learn more!

Now did I beat her to it?

Update: Yes HAH!!! Plus I find it very amusing that my spell checker didn’t recognise queef …

Treo 650 – first thoughts

// August 30th, 2005 // No Comments » // Personal

I’ve been the proud owner of Palmone’s flagship Smart phone the Treo 650 for 4 days now and figure it’s about time I let you know what I think of it.

The Hand-held

It’s not quite as bulky as I thought it was and the moulded shape feels very comfortable in the hand. The keypad is tiny but seems strangely usable after a bit of practice. That said I mis-key 100 times a day on a full size keyboard so a few slip ups on a thumb board are to be expected.

Battery life seems pretty good. Of course I’ve been playing with the darn thing nigh on incessantly since I got it so I haven’t really had chance to properly evaluate it yet but the charges are pretty quick and if I get into the habit of sticking it on last thing at night then I can easily get through a day’s moderate usage.

The screen is lovely, crisp, clear and a whole world apart from the Tungsten T.

The camera … is completely unrequired but seems to work ok. My only issue is with getting sound on video – i.e I can’t but I’m sure I’ll work it out.

The WiFi connection … doesn’t exist. Now I’m going to have to do something about that. Come on PalmOne, this is the 21st century, get with the program and give me WiFi support on my smart phone!

The Phone

The phone is amazing. It seems to get a signal almost anywhere (Cornish granite not withstanding) and the sound quality is crisp and clear. The speaker phone seems a little half assed but passable and the links into your contacts manager are everything I’d hoped for. That’s to say fast, easy, transparent.

One small issue though. This is a modern smart phone with MP3 playback capability? WHERE ARE MY MP3 RINGTONES? And yes I know I can buy one of 2 or 3 apps that do it for me but I just paid £350 for the damn phone… grr

The Web and Email

Versa mail = wow!
Blazer = wow x 2!!!

I love the ease with which I set this puppy up. It took me one hour to go from box to on-line with all contacts sync’ed. GPRS reports a data rate of some 112kbps which isn’t too shabby (think double a 56k modem and your nearly there) and the Versamail scheduled email check is a lovely feature (pity I can’t get it to check more than one account at a time though). The tie ins to blazer and Docs to Go are also fantastic.

Again though I have one small issue. There is no way to see a total of your GPRS data usage without using a 3rd party app. As mobile data in Jersey is not cheap I’d really like to be able to keep an eye on my usage over the first month to see if I need to change my Tariff to one that gives me a better rate on data traffic.

The other software

I’m used to the Palm OS suite of standard tools and the new versions don’t disappoint. ToDo is still crappy though only supporting one list with multiple categories but the rest of it is all wonderfully quick and easy to use.

I would ask why the hell they’re still shipping with Real Player though? And why doesn’t the media program recognise JPEGs copied onto the card?

Of course the first thing I did was grab a copy of Snails and the wonderfully addictive Village Sim which have been getting more action than most apps. I still haven’t really found a use for some of the preinstalled stuff though (SimBook … what the hell is that about?) but love the new look of the world clock.

So, Rob’s whirlwind round up:

Hardware: 9/10
Would be 10/10 but no WiFi = no winning point

Software: 8/10
There are a couple of gaping holes in the feature set but what you do get works very well indeed

Set-up: 10/10
Piece of cake

General Usage: 9/10
I love using the thing. I love it so much I’ve gone through 6 complete battery cycles since I got it

Would I recommend this to someone else? f you have a need to be in touch 24/7 and look good doing it the get yourself a Treo. It’s a fantastic little machine and well worth the money. Now … about that WiFi …

Long weekend? What long weekend?

// August 30th, 2005 // No Comments » // Personal

That was the last bank holiday of the year was it?

Well I missed that Memo! Or rather I didn’t. I was jumping around with joy at the prospect of having a three day weekend but not for the same reason as everyone else. Why was I so overjoyed to have an extra day off work?

Because it meant I had an extra day to go to work!

Of course I mean work at Paymaster rather than Megacomp. Having three whole days to get stuff done was fantastic. As I’ve said before, I’m more than a little concerned that, due to my 3 month notice period (only 33 working days left by the way) it’s going to be very tight to get the Paymaster stuff completed in time. As it stands I’m not going to be there for the most important period so far and am having to spend a lot of time making sure that my colleagues know what to say in my absence.

Of course the main reason I was so over the moon about the extra day is because something very exciting happened on Friday afternoon. I can’t tell you what it is (yet) but suffice to say it’s very big and very good news.

Safe as houses!

One thing that I won’t be worried about when working at Paymaster is security…

I mean just look at out next door neighbours:

State of Jersey Police

that said I’m less reassured by “the company” that operates out of a shop opposite us:

The Company

Funny that, I’d assumed they’d be more covert about it!

Hmm, it seems to be developing into something of a habit this… but I suppose it’s better than not posting anything at all.

I’m in the market for (yet another) new phone. My venerable T39m is lovely but a bit lacking in the feature set. My even older Palm T has finally died or at least is descending into the PDA equivalent of senile dementia and my efforts to find a mobile that does all the PDA stuff have been met with failure, mostly of the tiny clicky buttons and SMS input type.

My problem is that I have a requirements and feature list a mile and a half long some of which are inherently contradictory.

It must have, Quad band GSM, GPRS / EDGE, Bluetooth, WiFi. It must go on-line, email, sync with my mac. It must also run for longer than 1 hour per charge, have a keyboard (or thumb board), have a stylus touch screen. It need not play mp3’s or take photos. It must read office documents and have enough expandable storage space to keep them all with me. It must be small enough to sit in a suit pocket without ruining the lie of the jacket (I paid almost as much for the suit as I will for the phone). The list goes on …

My other problem is that Mini PDA technology is still in it’s infancy and therefore, for the most part, has one major problem: size.

The ones that are big enough to offer all the features I want are too big and the smaller ones don’t fulfil my requirements in terms of screen real estate or data input (cursed little clicky buttons) so what’s a guy to do?

Well I compromised.

And tomorrow will be putting a order in for a PalmOne Treo 650.

It better work as well as it says it does!

Sneak Peak…

Ooh you lucky people you.

You get to be amongst the first of the world at large to take a look at my first serious piece of work for NewJob.

We’re in the process of formulating an aggressive “air-lift” campaign to get both product and company to market as quickly as possible and as such we have an interim website with an on-line copy of our (not yet printed but will be in 10 days) brochure.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you, the soon to be leading payroll software producers in the Channel Islands…

Or something to fill the time.

Yeah … this was filler.

The problem with proxies

// August 24th, 2005 // No Comments » // Personal

(aka That Poxy Proxy and other tales)

I know I said this blog would be less with the techy stuff than XSet used to be but this is worthy of note.

Google are a couple of hours away from releasing have released their own Google Talk chat network and client.

I love IM stuff (I hate that there isn’t a standard across which I can talk to everyone but what can you do), I use MSN mostly but the new Google system is based around Jabber, a chat protocol I’ve heard lots about but never used (mostly due to having no friends who use it).

Now heres my problem. At work we sit behind a Microsoft ISA Server* which I have bemoaned before as being a right royal pain in the ass when it comes to certain common tasks, namely, FTP and IM.

After 2 years working for MegaComp I finally worked out how to get MSN working through the ISA Proxy. Now I’m sat at work, with a new Chat client out there and no way to get iChat to connect.

One of the best bits about new job will be having a direct,

*ISA or Proxies are designed to work with a Firewall to share and secure a single internet connection between multiple computers. It allows all traffic to be monitored as well as controlling which HTTP ports can be used to connect to the internet

In the imaging market

// August 22nd, 2005 // No Comments » // Personal

I’m in the market for a new camera.

Sad though I am to say it, my wonderful EOS 500 Rebel SLR is suffering from a total lack of use (and my skills are suffering from lack of practice). I’ve always loved working with a camera, composing and choosing a shot, focusing and calculating the relevant aperture and exposure times ( whilst I’ve always owned SLR’s capable of fully automatic shooting that’s mostly so I can give it to my mum on the rare occasions when I want to be my own photos!) but there are two big problems with the traditional method of photography that I was trained in.

The first is simple impatience. I want to shoot and see my work now dammit!

The second is cost. Running a film camera these days costs a small fortune in film and development or darkroom time.

So I’ve made the decision to go digital. Having looked at the various models on the market I’ve decided to stick with Canon and, in the first week of October, will be purchasing one of these with one of these to go on the front and one of these to go on top.

Some of you may remember that I was in the midst of purchasing a 350D not so long ago but decided against it. Mostly because it was going to be sponsored by work (i.e. they picked up half my tab) and also because I was unconvinced that it would meet my requirements.

The whole package is about 1.3 grand (ouch) but will hopefully be future proof for a good 5 years or so.

Oh and it shoots at just over 5 fps for a 28 frame burst! How cool is that?
